What is Knee Pain and Why Physiotherapy Can Help
Knee pain is a common condition that can affect people of all ages and activity levels. It may develop from overuse, poor movement mechanics, sports injuries, arthritis, previous trauma, or everyday wear and tear. Whether your pain occurs with walking, running, stairs, squatting, or prolonged sitting, knee pain can significantly limit mobility and confidence in movement.
At Collingwood Physiotherapy & Wellness, we take a physiotherapy-first approach to knee pain treatment. Rather than focusing only on the knee itself, we assess the entire lower body including the hips, ankles, feet, and movement patterns. By improving strength, alignment, and control, physiotherapy can reduce stress on the knee, relieve pain, and help prevent recurrence.

When Should You Consider Treatment for Knee Pain?
You should consider treatment if you experience:
- Persistent or recurring knee pain with activity or daily movement
- Pain when climbing or descending stairs
- Discomfort during squatting, kneeling, or rising from a chair
- Swelling, stiffness, or reduced range of motion in the knee
- Knee instability or a feeling of “giving way”
- Pain following sports, exercise, or prolonged walking or standing
Early assessment and treatment can help prevent minor knee issues from becoming chronic or more serious.

How We Treat Knee Pain at Collingwood Physiotherapy & Wellness
Knee pain is rarely an isolated issue. It often involves muscle weakness, joint stress, alignment issues, and movement compensations from the hips or ankles. Our treatment is led by physiotherapy and may be supported by other services when appropriate to optimize recovery.
What to Expect During Your Recovery
- Sessions 1–2: Reduced pain and swelling, improved knee movement, and activity guidance
- Sessions 3–4: Improved strength, stability, and confidence with daily tasks
- Sessions 5–6: Enhanced control with stairs, squatting, and exercise
- Sessions 7–8: Long-term prevention strategies and return to full activity
Many patients experience noticeable improvement within 3–4 sessions, with full recovery typically achieved within 6–8 visits depending on the cause and severity of symptoms.
How Our Other Services Help with Knee Pain
These services can complement physiotherapy by addressing strength, biomechanics, and persistent pain, creating a more comprehensive approach to improving knee function and supporting long-term recovery.

FAQs About Knee Pain Treatment
Can physiotherapy help knee pain without surgery?
Yes. Many knee problems, including runner’s knee, tendon irritation, and mild ligament strains, respond well to physiotherapy without surgery. Treatment focuses on easing pain, restoring movement, and strengthening the muscles around the knee and hip. Surgery is usually only considered when a structured rehab program hasn’t helped.
How long does knee pain recovery take with physiotherapy?
It depends on the cause and severity. Many people notice less pain and better movement within 3 to 4 sessions, with full recovery typically in 6 to 8 visits. More complex cases, like rehab after knee surgery, take longer and follow a staged program.
Should I stop exercising if my knee hurts?
Not necessarily. Complete rest can slow recovery and weaken the muscles that support the knee. A physiotherapist can help you adjust your activity, such as switching to lower-impact exercise, while keeping your strength up. If pain is sharp, the knee swells, or it feels unstable, get it assessed first.
What knee conditions does physiotherapy treat?
At our Vancouver clinics we treat runner’s knee, meniscus irritation, ligament strains, kneecap tracking problems, and rehab after knee surgery. Physiotherapy also helps manage knee arthritis symptoms. Every plan starts with an assessment of the knee, hip, and ankle to find what is actually driving the pain.
Is physiotherapy for knee pain covered by insurance?
Many extended health plans cover physiotherapy, and we direct bill more than 40 providers, including Pacific Blue Cross, Sun Life, Manulife, and Canada Life (formerly Great-West Life). We also treat ICBC and WorkSafeBC claims. Call either location to confirm your plan before your first visit.
Is physiotherapy or another treatment better for knee pain?
It depends on the cause. Physiotherapy is usually the best place to start because it treats the strength and movement problems behind the pain, not just the symptoms. Shockwave therapy or custom orthotics can add to physiotherapy in specific cases, but rarely replace it.
Can shockwave therapy help with knee pain?
It can, particularly for stubborn pain that isn’t improving with exercise alone. Shockwave stimulates the body’s natural healing response and improves local circulation. It’s usually used alongside physiotherapy and strengthening rather than on its own.
Do I need a doctor's referral or imaging before starting physio for knee pain?
No. You don’t need a referral to book physiotherapy, though some extended health plans require one for reimbursement, so check with your insurer. X-rays or an MRI usually aren’t needed to start unless there’s been major trauma or a suspected fracture.
Will I need to do exercises at home?
Yes. Home exercises are a core part of knee recovery, not an add-on. Your physiotherapist will give you a progressive program for the muscles that support the knee, and doing it consistently between sessions is what drives most of the improvement.
