What Is Sciatica and How Physiotherapy Can Help
Sciatica is pain that radiates along the sciatic nerve, from the lower back through the hip and down the leg. It does not always come from a disc problem: joint dysfunction in the spine, muscle tension, or posture-related nerve compression can all be behind your symptoms.
At Collingwood Physiotherapy & Wellness, we start with a thorough assessment to identify what is actually driving your pain, then build a plan around your spine, hips, and nervous system rather than treating the leg pain in isolation.

When Should You Consider Treatment for Sciatica?
You should consider treatment if you experience:
- Persistent or radiating pain from your lower back into your hip, glute, or leg
- Numbness, tingling, or weakness along the leg or foot
- Pain that worsens with sitting, standing, bending, or lifting
- Difficulty finding a comfortable position to sit or sleep
- Reduced mobility or stiffness through the lower back and hip
- Sciatica symptoms that flare with activity or prolonged postures
Early assessment and treatment can help prevent sciatica from becoming chronic or more serious.

How We Treat Sciatica at Collingwood Physiotherapy & Wellness
Sciatica is rarely treated successfully by addressing pain alone. Effective recovery requires understanding how your spine, hips, muscles, and nervous system are interacting. Our care is led by physiotherapy and supported by other services when appropriate.
What to Expect During Your Recovery
- Sessions 1–2: Reduction in leg pain intensity, improved movement tolerance
- Sessions 3–4: Improved nerve mobility, posture awareness, and strength
- Sessions 5–6: Increased activity tolerance with fewer flare-ups
- Sessions 7–8: Long-term strategies for prevention and self-management
Many patients experience meaningful relief within the first few sessions, with steady improvement over 6–8 visits depending on symptom severity and duration.
How Our Other Services Help with Sciatica
Together, these services complement physiotherapy by addressing muscle tension, spinal mobility, and persistent soft tissue discomfort to support improved movement and recovery.

FAQs About Sciatica Treatment
Can physiotherapy really help sciatica?
Yes. Physiotherapy is an effective treatment for sciatica because it addresses nerve irritation, spinal and hip mechanics, and the strength deficits that often keep symptoms going. It treats the cause of the compression, not just the pain radiating down your leg.
How long does sciatica take to heal?
It varies, but many people see meaningful improvement within 4 to 8 weeks of consistent treatment. Most patients respond well within 6 to 8 physiotherapy visits, though more severe cases involving numbness or weakness can take longer and may need further assessment.
Should I rest or stay active with sciatica?
Stay active where you can. Complete rest is rarely recommended and can slow recovery by reducing nerve mobility and muscle strength. Controlled movement and guided exercise help calm nerve sensitivity and rebuild the strength needed to prevent symptoms from returning.
Is sciatica always caused by a disc problem?
No. While disc issues are a common cause, sciatica can also come from joint dysfunction in the spine, muscle tension near the sciatic nerve, or posture-related nerve compression. Your assessment identifies which of these is actually driving your specific symptoms.
Do I need imaging before starting treatment for sciatica?
Usually not. A thorough physical assessment is typically enough to identify the cause of your sciatica and begin treatment. Imaging such as an MRI is generally reserved for cases with red flag symptoms or when initial treatment isn’t progressing as expected.
Will I get exercises to do at home for sciatica?
Yes. Home exercises are essential for calming nerve irritation and building the core and hip strength that supports your spine. Staying consistent between sessions is one of the biggest factors in how quickly your leg pain improves and stays away.
Do I need a doctor's referral to start treatment for sciatica?
No. You can book a sciatica assessment directly without a referral, though some extended health plans require one for reimbursement, so check with your insurer. If your symptoms suggest something more serious, we’ll refer you for further investigation right away.
Is sciatica treatment covered by insurance?
Many extended health plans cover physiotherapy, and we direct bill more than 40 providers, including Pacific Blue Cross, Sun Life, Manulife, and Canada Life (formerly Great-West Life). We also treat ICBC and WorkSafeBC claims. Call either location to confirm your plan before your first visit.
