Plantar Fasciitis Physiotherapy Treatment at Collingwood Physiotherapy & Wellness

What is Plantar Fasciitis and Why Physiotherapy Can Help

Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common causes of heel pain, caused by irritation of the thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of your foot. It often shows up as sharp heel pain with your first steps in the morning, or after sitting for a while, and can make walking, standing, or exercising uncomfortable. Plantar fasciitis physiotherapy at our Vancouver clinics focuses on reducing pain, restoring flexibility in the foot and calf, and correcting the movement patterns that put ongoing strain on the plantar fascia.

At Collingwood Physiotherapy & Wellness, we take a physiotherapy-first approach, looking beyond the heel to your calf tightness, foot mechanics, footwear, and activity load. By addressing these factors together, physiotherapy can relieve pain, support healing, and help prevent the condition from returning.

When Should You Consider Treatment for Plantar Fasciitis?

You should consider treatment if you experience:

  • Sharp heel pain with your first steps in the morning
  • Pain that eases with movement but returns after rest or long periods of standing
  • Heel or arch discomfort that worsens after walking, running, or exercise
  • Tightness or stiffness in your calf or the bottom of your foot
  • Pain that has lasted more than a few weeks despite rest
  • Discomfort that changes how you walk or limits your daily activity

Early assessment and treatment can help prevent plantar fasciitis from becoming a long-standing, harder-to-treat problem.

Our 4-Phase Plantar Fasciitis Recovery Program

Plantar Fasciitis

How We Treat Plantar Fasciitis at Collingwood Physiotherapy & Wellness

Plantar fasciitis usually develops gradually, from a combination of tight calf muscles, foot mechanics, footwear, and activity load. Our treatment is led by physiotherapy and may be supported by other services when appropriate to optimize recovery.

What to Expect During Your Recovery

  • Sessions 1–3: Reduced morning heel pain and initial activity guidance
  • Sessions 4–6: Improved calf and foot flexibility, better tolerance for standing and walking
  • Sessions 7–9: Increased strength and stability, more comfort with daily activity and exercise
  • Sessions 10–12: Long-term prevention strategies and return to full activity

Many people notice less morning heel pain within 4 to 6 sessions, with fuller recovery typically taking 10 to 12 visits or more, since plantar fasciitis often responds more gradually than other conditions.

I first started going to this clinic after seeing a recommendation in a Facebook group called Vancouver Girls Ask. I absolutely love this place. It’s clean, organized, and welcoming. The reception team is always kind and helpful. Their website is well organized too, which makes booking and managing appointments easy. The location is also very convenient since it’s literally right across from the SkyTrain station. I do physiotherapy with Simeon. From the very beginning, he has been extremely honest, attentive, and careful with me. I can be very conscious of my body, my form, and whether I’m doing things correctly, but with his guidance, I feel calm, strong, and taken care of. For massages, I see Jared, and I love how he keeps every session innovative and personalized. He always starts by asking what I would like to work on, and somehow I’m constantly discovering tiny muscles I didn’t even know existed 😂. Every session feels different and intentional, and I always leave feeling like we actually worked on what my body needed that day. Both Simeon and Jared are incredibly professional, friendly, and genuinely caring. My husband also gets his massages here with Tuan and has nothing but good things to say about his experience as well. One little tip if you’re someone like me who likes to book weekly appointments: book in advance! Especially once you know your work schedule, because their appointments can fill up quickly. Overall, I genuinely love coming here and feel very lucky to have found such a great clinic. Highly recommend! 💜

Highly recommend Dr. Aimee Chen atCollingwood Physiotherapy! I've been seeing her for a workplace injury, and the fact that they do direct claims with WorkSafeBC makes the whole process so easy. Dr. Amy is a wonderful listener, asks great questions, and constantly updates your treatment plan based on how you're recovering week by week. The exercise videos she sends for home care are incredibly helpful and easy to follow. Excellent, attentive service-I will definitely keep coming back here!

FAQs About Plantar Fasciitis Treatment

Can physiotherapy help plantar fasciitis without surgery?

Yes. Most cases of plantar fasciitis respond well to physiotherapy, and surgery is rarely needed. Treatment focuses on reducing pain, improving flexibility in the calf and plantar fascia, and correcting the movement patterns that put ongoing strain on your heel. A structured program is usually tried first, well before surgery is considered.

Why does plantar fasciitis hurt most with my first steps in the morning?

This is one of the most recognizable signs of plantar fasciitis. Overnight, the plantar fascia tightens while your foot is at rest, so your first steps stretch it suddenly and cause a sharp pain. Once you’ve moved for a few minutes it usually eases, though the underlying tissue is still irritated.

How long does it take to recover from plantar fasciitis with physiotherapy?

It varies, and plantar fasciitis often takes longer than other conditions to fully settle. Many people notice less morning heel pain within 4 to 6 sessions, with fuller recovery typically taking 10 to 12 visits or more, depending on how long you’ve had symptoms and how consistently you follow your program.

Should I keep walking or running with plantar fasciitis?

It depends on your symptoms. Light walking is usually fine and can support recovery, but running or other high-impact activity often needs to be reduced or modified temporarily. Your physiotherapist can help you adjust your activity level while keeping you as active as possible during recovery.

Can custom orthotics help plantar fasciitis?

Custom foot orthotics can help by improving foot alignment and arch support, which reduces strain on the plantar fascia during standing, walking, and exercise. They’re not needed for everyone. Whether they’re useful depends on your foot mechanics and gait, assessed as part of your treatment plan.

Can shockwave therapy help plantar fasciitis?

Yes, particularly for stubborn pain that hasn’t fully responded to exercise alone. Shockwave therapy stimulates the body’s natural healing response in the plantar fascia and can reduce pain over a course of treatment. It’s usually used alongside physiotherapy and stretching rather than on its own.

Do I need a doctor's referral or imaging before starting physiotherapy for plantar fasciitis?

No. You don’t need a referral to book a plantar fasciitis assessment, though some extended health plans require one for reimbursement, so it’s worth checking your coverage. Imaging such as an X-ray usually isn’t needed to start unless your symptoms suggest something beyond typical plantar fasciitis.

What can I do at home to relieve plantar fasciitis pain?

Home care plays a real role in recovery. Calf and plantar fascia stretches, rolling your foot over a ball or frozen bottle, and choosing supportive footwear can all help manage symptoms between sessions. Your physiotherapist will give you a specific home program to follow consistently.

Is physiotherapy for plantar fasciitis covered by insurance?

Many extended health plans cover physiotherapy, and we direct bill more than 40 providers, including Pacific Blue Cross, Sun Life, Manulife, and Canada Life (formerly Great-West Life). We also accept ICBC and WorkSafeBC claims. Call either location to confirm your plan before your first visit.
